An insight into workplace eye protection

26 November 2024

SINCE THE early 1970s, it’s been a legal duty of care for all employers to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their workforce.

Eye protection is an essential element of PPE across a wide spectrum of industry; construction, manufacturing, engineering, automotive to name but a few. Any workplace with potential for airborne debris, dust particles or chemical splash should be considered hazardous for eyes.

Some environments warrant high levels of protection like sealed unit goggles or full face shields; some call for a simple pair of protective spectacles.  Safety glasses may come with side shields or a wide coverage lens, all of which extend the barrier of defence.

Modern aesthetics
At MCR Safety, the range of eye protection is diverse. When creating their portfolio, they’ve considered fashion eyewear trends along with modern aesthetics and combined them with safety and functionality. There’s over 40 workwear options to choose from, many are equally suited to DIY, sport, outdoor pursuits and leisure activities.

Coloured lens tints
These non-prescription glasses offer a number of different coloured lens tint to improve vision in various light conditions.  A blue mirror lens to reduce glare, a green lens to heighten definition or an amber lens to brighten a poorly lit space.  An ‘indoor/outdoor’ lens has a subtle beige hue which enables the wearer to move freely between fluctuating light levels without experiencing visual discomfort or dazzling effect.

Environmentally friendly
In addition to the variety of lens colours, different coatings are also available including anti-fog and anti-scratch.  Many styles have UVC, MCR’s exclusive eco-friendly anti-mist coating. The coating process has both performance and environmental benefits.

Firstly, performance is enhanced by three times for anti-mist protection.  Regular thermal curing anti-mist can endure 1 to 2 times 80º hot water steam test; whereas UVC coating maintains non-misting for up to 3 times longer.

And secondly, the environmental benefits. The UVC Anti-Mist Coating process has been independently calculated to consume 87% less energy than the traditional thermal curing process.  By switching to this new process, MCR can prevent up to 12,862 kgs of CO2 being emitted per month.  Lookout for the leaf symbol to see where the coating has been applied.

Enhanced productivity
Ergonomically designed using lightweight materials, flexible frames and soft temple, nose and brow fittings, these glasses are built for comfort and all-day wear.  They’re reliable, well-fitting and suitable for the working environment, all of which can only enhance the productivity of a workforce.

All eyewear in the MCR Safety range is certified EN166, the European standard for personal eye protection.  It ensures that the glasses conform to a set of minimum requirements to protect against hazards including impact, and chemical splash.  Plus, glasses are manufactured to the highest quality standards in MCR’s our own factories.
