New arc rated PYRAD switch suit
24 February 2025
GORE-TEX Brand’s workwear division has constant innovation, extensive research and development running through its core. With end user safety and protection remaining top of mind, Jonas Andersson explains the new arc rated technology they recently introduced to their product portfolio.

The new arc rated PYRAD switch suit by GORE-TEX LABS has been designed for workers who need protection against the thermal hazards of electrical arc flashes with high incident energy risk exposures. Switch suits are vital PPE for the health and safety of engineers who need Class 2 protection. These suits consist of bib trousers, jacket and hood, which are worn together when there is any risk of an arc flash incidents: IEC 61482-1-2 Class 2 and IEC 61482-1-1 APTV ≥40cal/cm².
Until now, typical Class 2/ 40 cal garments have been made from multi-ply fabric systems resulting in them being bulky, confining, and restricting movement, as well as being heavy and uncomfortable to wear. The PYRAD switch suit by GORE-TEX LABS is the only single-ply Class 2/ 40 cal solution currently available. It provides the wearer with the benefits of being lightweight, less bulky, and breathable. It also offers up to 39% more flexibility, than other products in the market and it is this high freedom of movement which helps to reduce muscle fatigue.
The fabric weighs in ≤330g/m² which means it is up to 20% lighter than other premium products currently available in the market and more than 50% lighter than a competitive entry level product. It consists of a nylon outer shell, PYRAD fabric technology by GORE-TEX LABS, an advanced membrane, and a flame-resistant backer.
Offers Thermal Regulation
The high breathability of the PYRAD switch suit is important for thermal regulation because engineers often work in arc flash risk areas indoors and in confined spaces. The result is wearers do not have to compromise between breathable comfort and reliable safety protection.
Mechanical Integrity
Gore’s internal testing and third-party external testing has proven that during arc flash exposure the laminate provides best-in-class mechanical integrity. The PYRAD switch suit by GORE-TEX LABS blocks convective and radiant heat, stops flame propagation, and forms a carbonaceous char. This means that the laminate keeps its physical integrity and will not flake or disintegrate, and no holes are formed through the inner most layer.
ProGARM, the arc flash protection specialist manufacturer, has embraced this new product technology and their PYRAD switch suits by GORE-TEX LABS are available to order now and in stock from spring 2025.
