World Health Day 2022

Led by the World Health Organization, the 2022 version of the annual awareness day is based on the theme ‘Our planet, our health’, with a focus on clean air, water and food. It asks people to consider ‘what can you do to protect our planet and our health’?

For OSH professionals, there are many ways they can achieve this in their work, as well as everyday life.

Clean water

For many OSH professionals, managing the risks of legionella is a crucial aspect of their day-to-day duties.

If workplaces have a cooling tower or evaporative condenser, dry or wet cooling systems, hot and cold water systems then there may be a risk of exposure to legionella.

There is more information on the UK Health and Safety Executive’s website about general legionella management while IOSH has a CPD course which trains delegates on how to manage the risks, from carrying out risk assessments to designing maintenance schedules to support control systems.

Covid-19

There of course is still the very real risk of Covid-19 transmission in workplaces, so it remains important for organisations to consider how they manage these.

Since the very start of the pandemic, IOSH has provided guidance for members and businesses on how to manage these risks, and this is still available on the website now.
