HSM/BSIF PPE Digital Conference - Today

HEALTH AND Safety Matters is hosting a free-to-attend digital conference on PPE with the British Safety Industry Federation today, which will feature speakers from the Health and Safety Executive, the Office for Product Safety and Standards and conclude with a digital ceremony to reveal the winners of the Safety and Health Excellence Awards.

The digital conference, which runs between 10am-2:30pm today (28 April 2021), will examine the role that PPE plays in effective safety and health management. It will look at PPE applications – Head to Toe – where it is used to protect against the range of hazards faced by wearers. The day will close with the Safety & Health Excellence Awards, which begin at 3:15pm and will be hosted by impressionist Alistair McGowan. You will be able to enjoy a live comedy set by Alistair before we reveal the winners for the Awards.

Throughout the day, delegates can network with each other via direct messaging, video calls or posting comments in the room.  Everyone who attends will receive a CPD certificate and the full agenda is below.

While OPSS own the “strategy” for product safety and will become involved in “national” issues of safety and compliance, the in-market enforcement of PPE safety and compliance is the responsibility of the HSE, when the products are being used at work, this responsibility falls to local trading standards officers when the product is acquired for “private use. This split section will outline the approach to ensuring that only safe compliant PPE is available on the market. It will also deal with the situation surrounding on-line sales.

The RSSS is a BSIF administered scheme designed to ensure that the market is provided with safe and compliant product from suppliers who understand and discharge their obligations and responsibilities, and who have customer facing staff who are educated and are able to demonstrate the necessary knowledge to engage with PPE users. Those who need PPE as part of their safety and health management need to be discerning in their sourcing and the RSSS is a scheme which helps users in intelligent sourcing. 

RPE Fit Testing and Fit2Fit - 11:20 am - 11:50 am

Every year there are thousands of deaths in the UK from respiratory diseases which originated at work. This section will give an overview of the importance of face fit testing of tight fitting RPE, which is a legal requirement in the UK and the role it plays in keeping wearers protected. The Fit2Fit Competency Accreditation Scheme for fit testers is administered by BSIF and exists to improve the quality of fit test provision and signpost users to individuals competent to provide this important service.

UK PPE Conformity Assessment - 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm

Since the UK left the EU we are no longer bound by Regulation previously controlled at EU level and since the signing of the UK – EU Trade and Co-operation Agreement the UK has a new conformity assessment regime in force for PPE. The United Kingdom Conformity Assessment regime is under the control of OPSS.

BSIF PPE Special Interest Groups Introduction - 12:45 pm - 2:25 pm

Through the PPE Special Interest Groups (SIG) BSIF provides a forum for members across the PPE supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, distributors and specialist service providers stay informed and be able to influence PPE product standards as they impact their particular area of PPE, from safety footwear all the way to head protection cover those and all points between. As well as enabling participation in national and international PPE standards development the SIGs pool their collective knowledge and expertise to provide independent product and sector specific guidance for users who have chosen to use PPE as a “control” in their Safety and Health Management policies.

The SIG forum also includes the BSIF Test and Certification Association which includes all the UK Approved Bodies (formerly Notified Bodies under the CE regime) scoped for product approval decisions for PPE and also includes BSIF members who have UKAS accredited PPE laboratories The section will take presentations from the chairs of the SIGs covering activity updates on
