IOSH calls for action this Global Asbestos Awareness Week
01 April 2025
THIS GLOBAL Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW), IOSH is calling for more action to prevent exposure to the deadly material and save lives.

Held every year from 01–07 April, GAAW is organised by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) with the aim of rising awareness of asbestos, preventing exposure and protecting people from related diseases.
IOSH has been a supporter of the week over the past few years with asbestos being one of the carcinogens it focused on through its No Time to Lose occupational cancer campaign. It is calling for more action around the world to tackle the scourge of asbestos.
Ruth Wilkinson, IOSH’s head of policy and public affairs, said: "Asbestos remains a major issue around the world and is the biggest cause of occupational cancer. That is why we are supporting Global Asbestos Awareness Week once more.
“We want to see more action from governments, public policymakers, businesses and other stakeholders to prevent exposure, manage asbestos risks and, ultimately, save lives.
"Despite the risks, there is still too much uncertainty and ignorance around managing asbestos. The time for action is now.”
Throughout the week, the campaign will address a number of areas.
- Banning the mining, manufacturing, and use of all six asbestos fibres worldwide
- Preventing asbestos exposure
- Increasing compliance and enforcement of existing laws and regulations
- Strengthening international partnerships to protect public health.
Linda Reinstein, who is President and co-founder of ADAO and lost her husband to mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure, said: “As we mark the 21st Global Asbestos Awareness Week, I’m reminded that progress is only possible through partnership. GAAW is more than a campaign – it’s a global call to action that unites scientists, advocates, workers, and policymakers across borders.
“What inspires me most is the unwavering commitment of our international partners like IOSH and BOHS, who share the belief that prevention is not only possible – it’s essential. We campaign together because every life lost to asbestos is a preventable tragedy.”
