Carbon forecasting: Helping you save time, cost, and carbon emissions

29 June 2023

THE IMPACTS of climate change are already starting to affect us, as extreme weather and biodiversity loss affects the communities least able to withstand it. Without concerted and ambitious action from companies and governments, climate change will have a significant effect on our businesses and our daily lives.

Saving time, cost and carbon emissions is at the forefront of most people’s minds when thinking about their business. Sustainability and saving on carbon emissions is becoming ever more important and ways to make your business more sustainable can be a daunting thought as there are so many changes that can be made, some more difficult than others. At Greenham, we are dedicated to helping your business be more carbon efficient with simple solutions and an easy-to-understand carbon forecasting model.

What is net zero?

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests for example. Science shows that in order to advert the worst impacts of climate change and preserve a liveable planet, global temperature increase needs to be limited to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Currently, the Earth is already about 1.1C warmer than it was in the late 1800s and emissions continue to rise. To reach this target we need to be net zero by 2050. Bunzl are dedicated as a business to reaching this target in the effort to help protect our planet.

In 2021, Bunzl plc joined the largest alliance on climate change and committed to the business ambition for 1.5° C and are now members of Race to Zero. Bunzl plc has announced new, long-term carbon efficiency targets across the group for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions that are aligned to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

By using science-based targets, Bunzl aim to become 25% more carbon-efficient by 2025, 50% by 2030 and net zero by 2050. We are a signatory of the UN’s Business Ambition for 1.5C and the race to zero.

At Bunzl Greenham, we became 24.4% more carbon-efficient from 2019 – 2022 through the continued roll out of low carbon fleet solutions and warehouse efficiency improvements. This year we hope to have nine delivery vehicles with solar film matting, 52% of our warehouses with LED lighting installed and an 100% renewable electricity supply.

As we head towards 2025, Bunzl will be making a few significant changes that will help in making the business more carbon efficient. We will be transitioning all the applicable fleet to low and zero carbon solutions. We will be trialling alternative fuels in our larger vehicles and taking energy efficiency measures in warehouses. We will also be procuring and generating renewable energy.

What is carbon forecasting?

Carbon forecasting is the process of predicting the amount of carbon emissions that will be produced in the future. This can be done by analysing historical data on emissions, as well as economic and demographic trends that may impact the level of emissions. Carbon forecasts are used to inform policy decisions related to reducing emissions, such as setting emissions targets or designing carbon pricing schemes.

At Greenham, our solutions significantly reduce road miles and minimise both our and our customers’ carbon footprint by consolidating multiple items into single mixed pallet deliveries. We are also playing our part by cutting emissions across our own business – because it’s critical that we support the global efforts to limit warming.

We have a responsibility to help society transition to a more sustainable world and to become more sustainable ourselves. By using your delivery data and analysing your ordering profiles, we can calculate and project what your carbon emissions will be. We have developed a model that demonstrates your current emissions related to your Greenham deliveries. We then work with you to show how small changes in ordering patterns and product choices can result in big changes to your carbon emissions. This not only helps us to make decisions, but it can help clients along their journey to net zero too. The carbon forecasting model uses a driver-based approach to forecast different scenarios and policy initiative impacts.

We will send you a report demonstrating the monthly impact of the orders you have received from us and a recommended target for emissions reductions. With forecasting the carbon emissions, we can work together in making better informed decisions around sustainability.

Together we can save time, cost, and carbon emissions.
