Fire Safety North debuts in Manchester

Delegates will be treated to more than 14 hours of free educational content that is being split across two theatres – The Fire Safety Keynote Theatre (Sponsored by Advance) and the Fire and Evacuation Theatre (Sponsored by Fire and Security Matters magazine). 

Fire Safety North is the ideal place to network with like-minded professionals and to share best practice and there’s no better opportunity to do so than during the breakfast briefings. On 10 October, delegates are invited to attend a breakfast briefing where they will enjoy a bacon roll, refreshments while networking and then enjoy a session on understanding passive fire protection.

The breakfast on day two will be served while the topic focuses on tall building fires and lessons that must be learned following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire. The session will look at the importance of reliable detection systems for tall buildings, lobby for the mandation of sprinklers in all residential homes and how to safely evacuate from the premises. 

Day one

Day one will focus on complying with legislation with delegates invited to take part in a fire safety mock trial. Leading fire safety prosecutor Warren Spencer will lead the prosecution against a defendant in a case under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 while a leading barrister will attempt to convince the jury of the defendant’s innocence. Delegates will then be given the opportunity to be judge and jury so make sure you don’t miss out on this lively and interactive demonstration of life in a court room for fire safety offences. 

Warren Spencer has prosecuted more than 100 cases under the Fire Safety Order and in a separate seminar he will share some of the most common pitfalls that have led to prosecutions against companies across the UK. 

In another interactive session, experienced fire safety trainer Roy Smith will deliver a live chemical explosion demonstration, which will show the devastating effects of not safely storing chemicals. Andy Green will also tell delegates how to ensure that visual alarm devices are complaint with the law and why it’s important for them to be installed to protect deaf people. Meanwhile, Paul Lane will provide a case study on how to protect vulnerable people in sheltered accommodation from fire safety risks.

Day two

Day two will provide a focus on business continuity and disaster planning, including a session from Manchester City Council about how it responded to the recent bombing at the Manchester Evening News Arena. The Welsh government will also deliver an address about how it successfully passed legislation that makes it a legal requirement to install sprinklers in all new buildings. 

Back by popular demand, after packing theatres in Birmingham and Glasgow, Neil Parkin will explain how delegates can eliminate false alarms in their premises. Neil’s colleague Robin Kemp will also deliver a session on the importance of installing emergency lighting and how to ensure it meets your legal requirements. 

Dr Bob Docherty will explain the role of the responsible person and tell the audience how to ensure that their risk assessors are competent. Tony Hanley will be on hand to share a fascinating case study on how a suppression system helped prevent serious fire damage at a hospital. Nick Whiting will run a session on the benefits of combined fire and security detection systems.
