How effective is the fire safety design of your buildings?
27 February 2017
Southwark Council will face 22 charges under the Regulatory (Fire Safety) Order 2005 at a plea hearing on 24 February this year after three women and three children died in July 2009 in a flat fire caused by an electrical fault with a television.
London Fire Brigade alleges that ceilings in the building were not constructed in a way that would stop a fire from spreading. Other allegations claim that other parts of the construction of the building failed to adequately provide barriers to smoke and fire.
Incidents such as these remind us that ensuring standards of both passive fire resisting construction are as effective as active measures, and should be key components of any risk assessment in construction.
The FPA can help with constructional fire safety design with a three-day training course, Fire Safety Design of Buildings, which considers both passive and active fire protection systems as well as the importance of building design in ensuring business continuity.
The next available course dates are 19-21 April, London.
