When waste and recycling specialist SITA wanted to build on the OHSAS 18001 certification its achieved in 2009 the company turned to SGS, with whom they had a long-standing business relationship.

Following a 5-day course, SGS conducted a full review of all SITA UK's management systems, including policies and procedures, standard forms, and investigation systems.

And these were all found to be broadly compatible with the 18001 standard already.

SITA conducted a gap analysis and organised a working group of Regional Safety Managers, QEMS and Health & Safety Business Control Audit function to conduct the first certification audits in Northumberland and Cornwall.

After a review of the SGS audit report and successful certification to 18001 in these two areas, the regional safety managers made the necessary changes and started the roll out, cascading their knowledge to other regional safety managers.
