Lessons in safety - June 23
18 May 2023
International NEBOSH Diploma holders are now recognised by IOSH. Dee Arp explains the importance of this.
INTERNATIONAL HOLDERS of a NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals are to be recognised by IOSH for membership applications.
Holding a NEBOSH Diploma demonstrates the achievement of a recognised and relevant qualification and meets the academic requirements to apply for GradIOSH membership.
From July 2023, the NEBOSH National and International Diplomas will be regulated by Ofqual, offering regulatory protection to Diploma assessments taken anywhere in the world. This means that qualification holders from any country can use their NEBOSH Diploma for IOSH membership applications.
NEBOSH prides itself on rigorous and respected qualifications that prepare learners for the workplace and support their continued professional development.
We want all of our qualification holders to have access to the same opportunities so I’m delighted that NEBOSH was able to secure additional regulation with Ofqual, ensuring our international learners can continue their professional development with their membership body of choice.
Nicole Rinaldi, IOSH director of professional services said, “IOSH is pleased that the NEBOSH Diplomas will be regulated by Ofqual and meet our rigorous high standards of accreditation, giving international learners another route to IOSH membership.
“This provides additional choice, flexibility, and opportunity to join our vibrant international community of OSH professionals.”
NEBOSH is also making some minor adjustments to the assessment of its Diplomas, although the syllabus content remains the same. Please visit https://www.nebosh.org.uk/diploma-recognition for full details of the changes taking place, the impact of Ofqual regulation and information for NEBOSH learners at different stages of their studies.
The NEBOSH National and International Diplomas for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals are also recognised by BCSP, BCRSP and IIRSM for qualification holders wanting to pursue membership with a range of global membership bodies.

About the NEBOSH Level 6 Diplomas for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals
This advanced health and safety qualification supports academic and career progression. The syllabus covers technical application as well as the professional skills – such as leadership and managing change – needed to help learners develop their career.
Previous diploma learners have gone on to become competent and confident practitioners – its Alumni include senior health and safety professionals for organisations such as Unilever, Shell, Ministry of Energy & Industry of Qatar, Microsoft, KiwiRail and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Developed with experts, for future experts, NEBOSH consulted over 600 people, including directors, heads of, managers and advisors from the safety profession, in the development of the Diploma.
Barbara Derecka, HSE manager at JBT Food Tech says, “I think that at some point every health and safety professional starts asking one question – what’s next? What do I need to do to get better and do more? My answer was to take my NEBOSH Diplomas. They gave me the knowledge I needed to manage complex health and safety situations effectively and increased my self-confidence in giving health and safety and environmental advice. For me completing these qualifications filled in many of the pieces of the puzzle of being a great health and safety manager.
"NEBOSH Diplomas are industry recognised qualifications that really matter to many employers, so attaining them increases your employability. Many completely new opportunities became options for me after completing these qualifications.”
