Flame retardant fabrics
30 May 2017
Carrington is one of the world’s leading producers of workwear fabrics in the personal protective equipment (PPE) market.
Headquartered in Adlington, Lancashire, the business produces fabrics to meet varied demands across flame retardancy, waterproofing, the defence sector and general workwear – for companies in 75 countries around the world.
At this year’s Safety & Health Expo, Carrington will be showcasing a diverse range of products including two new flame retardant fabrics; Flametougher and Flamestat Satin 225 Pro 2.
Designed to offer durable performance and versatility for a variety of different environments, Flametougher has set new standards for stronger, tougher, more hard-wearing flame retardant workwear.
Certified to relevant flame retardant, antistatic, chemical splash and electric arc requirements, Flametougher has been designed for workers operating in particularly challenging environments – such as oil refineries – where there is a demand for multi-norm fabrics with both flame retardant and antistatic properties.
Flametougher has been developed in close collaboration with CORDURA fabric, which utilises CORDURA NYCO fabric technology for long-lasting performance. Durability is essential when considering the practicalities of tough environments and the intensive wear that garments face.
Whereas previously, frequent laundering at high temperatures may have reduced a fabric’s protective qualities over time, Flametougher has excellent resistance to abrasion and industrial laundering, helping to extend the lifespan of garments.
Retaining the same long lasting flame retardant qualities of Flametougher, the Flamestat Satin 225 Pro 2 is a lightweight, comfortable fabric, designed to meet today’s increasing multipurpose garment requirements. Withstanding precipitation, fog and ground humidity, the fabric remains breathable, keeping the wearer dry even in heavy downpours.
Both the Flametougher 280AS and Flamestat Satin 225 Pro2 have been shortlisted in the Best Fabric and Fibre Innovation category at the Professional Clothing Awards 2017.
Growing demand for high performance workwear both in the UK and abroad has seen Carrington expand production capacity to more than 50 million metres annually in the last year. It recently formed a joint venture with Portuguese textile manufacturer, TMG - Acabamentos Texteis SA, which will see Carrington manufacture an extra 18 million metres of fabric per year in Portugal.
Carrington aims to follow this up over the next two years, with a £10m investment in a new research and development laboratory, machinery and infrastructure, at its headquarters in Lancashire, UK.
