IOSH puts safety first place ahead of Games
28 November 2013
The world’s largest body for safety professionals has signed a letter of collaboration, to ensure a safety culture prevails in the build-up to the 2015 Southeast Asian Games to be held in Singapore.
The UK-based Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) signed the pledge via live video link with the Singapore Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC), to work together building a ‘safety culture’ among facilities and venue management providers for at the event. Sarah Hamilton, director of networks and international at IOSH, said: "As well as working alongside the Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee to build a safety culture for the venues and facilities managers involved in the Games, we hope to work with the committee to help develop a high standard of care for visitors to the actual event.
"The safety and the well-being of athletes, spectators, and our workforce will be paramount to the success of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore. Through this collaboration with IOSH, which was involved in planning for the London Olympics, we will be able to learn and share valuable good safety practices and procedures as we prepare for the Games”, said Executive Committee Member of the Singapore Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC), Mr Lai Chin Kwang.
The signing of the letter comes following meetings and events help in conjunction with the IOSH Singapore Branch. Last year, the Branch invited IOSH fellow Lawrence Waterman, former Head of Health and Safety for the UK’s 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority to speak on the Olympic legacy and safety in construction. Following this event IOSH had its first meeting with the SCC to begin working collaboratively and improve safety around the 2015 Games. Darren Brunton, chair of IOSH’s Singapore Branch, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for IOSH and the Singapore Branch to gain recognition within the Singapore safety framework and international arena. "The members of the Branch have been working hard with SSC to establish this first step working together. We hope this collaboration will go beyond the 2015 SEA Games whereby IOSH members will be able to support this specialist area of safety management.”
