DfBB launches new podcast series
15 October 2025
DRIVING FOR Better Business (DfBB), the award-winning National Highways programme, is launching a new free video podcast series – ‘The Hidden Risk’ – on 10 October 2025, alongside a free online course designed to help managers in supporting mental health and wellbeing of operational drivers.

The podcast will bring together industry leaders, experienced fleet managers, and safety specialists to share practical insights and innovative approaches, with a focus on improving safety outcomes for all road users.
In 2024, government data (RAS0601) reported collisions involving HGVs and vans that resulted in the deaths of 91 pedestrians, 21 cyclists, 59 motorcyclists, 129 car occupants, 15 van drivers, and five HGV drivers. Many more were seriously injured.
“Effectively managing road risk is a key responsibility for any organisation, but doing so requires the right tools and insight,” says Simon Turner, engagement manager for Driving for Better Business. “Health and safety teams need to be able to identify, assess, prevent, and mitigate risks that are often hidden or challenging to monitor. Our podcast explores these risks across all sectors with operational drivers, providing the practical knowledge and resources to manage them confidently and proactively.”
“The podcast will feature a range of experts from inside and outside the industry to help business leaders see and understand those hidden risks, challenge outdated mindsets, and take confident, strategic steps toward safer, stronger, and more responsible operations.”
The first episode features Tom Geraghty, the co-founder and CEO of Psych Safety. He will explore why psychological safety is vital for a strong safety culture and the impact that a lack of such an environment can have on those who drive for work.
The second podcast in the series will be released in early November. It will explore the introduction of safety ratings for commercial vehicles – something that has major implications for van and truck manufacturers, as well as the fleets that buy or lease them. Matthew Avery, Strategic Development Director at Euro NCAP, will provide essential listening for anyone wondering how safe the commercial vehicles they operate actually are…
Driving for Better Business launched its Driver Wellbeing Toolkit on 10 October 2025 - World Mental Health Day. This free online course for managers will provide a wealth of information on how to manage driver mental health and wellbeing. It can be accessed on the Driving for Better Business website: Driver Wellbeing Toolkit.
Driving for Better Business is an award-winning free business engagement programme, which offers a wide range of resources in the form of toolkits, videos, documents and web-based guidance. The podcast and e-learning module are valuable additions to the range of formats in which people can access the material.
“According to Ofcom figures, 20% of the adult population listens to at least one podcast a week, because it is an easy and engaging way of taking in information,” says Turner. “We realise that the industry has a diverse array of talented people and not all of them have the time or inclination to sit down and read extensively. We hope the podcast will be accessible, informative and engaging for everyone no matter how busy, or on-the-go they are.”
Managing road risk brings multiple and substantial benefits to fleet operators, beyond fulfilling their moral and legal obligations to safety. These include lower costs, better productivity and a more engaged and available workforce.
