Bespoke gas detection device
THE ENGINEERED Solutions division of Dräger, an international leader in the fields of medical and safety technology, has launched the Breathguard 2500, a bespoke gas detection device for use in defence, industrial, construction and emergency rescue confined space environments where there is a risk of exposure to carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

The technology was developed in response to a need identified by Dräger’s long-standing defence and security customer Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH. It specified a requirement for an ultra-rugged and durable continuous atmospheric monitoring device that could perform reliably in military defence vehicles, such as its new flexible capability vehicle, the Boxer.
The device contributes to the safety of personnel by measuring the gas concentration in the ambient air and when levels of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide gas become too high , all personnel within the confined space or vehicle will receive audible and visual alarms. Crucially, this will allow data to be transmitted via the Controller Area Network (CAN) to the Human Machine Interface (HMI) of the crew to facilitate fast response times.
Dräger’s bespoke, customisable design and Breathguard’s sophisticated electrochemistry is highly sensitive, precise, and reliable even in extreme conditions that could arise from explosions and ultra-high temperatures. Its patented internal pressure compensation system is designed for environmental pressures between 700 and 1300 mbar. It also features a silent mode, which suppresses all alarm sounds and dims the lights, and ensures Breathguard meets all relevant test requirements for the defence and security sector.
The Breathguard can be deployed in a range of fields and for a variety of applications. This includes use in military vehicles, both on land and in the sea, and in any industrial and emergency rescue environment where an air exchange is not guaranteed.
Tom Pearson, marketing manager engineered solutions at Dräger says the design of Breathguard demonstrates Dräger’s Engineered Solutions division’s ability to design for safety in the toughest environments: “Dräger’s engineering capability means we can support multiple industries by rethinking and redesigning existing, lifechanging technology and support, protecting the lives of front line personnel operating in different industries.
“We are thrilled to be able to deliver on Rheinmetall’s requirements and support the safety of military personnel.”
