Toxicity Charge enforced to address London’s ‘filthy air’
The new ‘T-Charge’ comes into force today in a bid by Mayor Saddiq Khan to counter air pollution in London.
Owners of older 'dirty' cars will face an emissions surcharge of £10 if they drive into London between 7am to 6pm from Monday to Friday.
The strategy is part of an £875million investment to tackle carbon emissions in the capital, by charging motorists whose vehicles do not meet Euro 4 standards. Typically, this would mean vehicles registered before 2006.
The £10 fee is in addition to the existing Congestion Charge, meaning for that drivers of the most polluting vehicles, the cost of entering central London will almost double from today.
If the T-Charge is not paid a Penalty Charge Notice of £130 will be sent, although this will be reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days.
