Stay safe this festive season 10/12/2018

The arrival of winter and the festive season brings added fire and security risks. Chubb Fire & Security, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, offers these tips to staying safe over the festive period:

1.  Going away? Do not post on social media about your travel plans and install a timer to switch lights on and off so that the house appears to be occupied. Ask to redirect your post, cancel any newspaper and milk deliveries and ask your neighbours to take away any packages.

2.   Do not keep keys in a place visible from the outside, such as hanging on hooks. In addition, do not hide keys near a door, such as under the doormat, as thieves know where to check.

3. Install a motion-activated exterior light to welcome you home after dark – and also deter unwanted visitors.

4.   Outside, be aware of your surroundings, lock your car and take care of high-value belongings like mobile phones, which have become a popular target for thieves.

5.   Fit a smoke alarm. Regularly test your smoke alarm and change the batteries at least once a year. And keep a fire blanket or suitable extinguisher handy in the kitchen.

6.  Don’t place your Christmas tree by a log-fire, radiator or heater. Turn all Christmas tree lights off before going to bed.

7.   In case of a fire, have an escape plan. Make sure you have more than one escape route should your exit become blocked.

8.  If using an electric blanket, make sure the cord isn’t frayed or worn before plugging it in. Never leave it on and unsupervised for longer than 15 minutes.

9. Never leave fires, candles or any form of exposed flame in the home unattended and ensure children are always supervised when around fires, candles or matches.

10. If using gas-, oil- or coal-burning appliances, use a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm to be quickly alerted to CO dangers. Ensure the home is properly ventilated and equipment is regularly serviced and maintained.

“Over this winter and the festive period, we hope the following guidelines will help people keep safe. It’s worrying that burglary and theft is on the rise and it acts as a reminder to exercise common sense in safety at all times,” said Mark Pettit, UK strategy director for Chubb Fire & Security.

“We also urge everyone to be mindful of domestic fire safety and measures to avoid a house fire,” Pettit added. “Installing a fire or smoke alarm is one of the easiest measures to prevent a potentially devastating incident from taking place.”

Cathedral protected from anti-social behaviour 21/09/2018

Chubb Fire & Security, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, is helping to protect the historic Grade I listed Chester Cathedral from potential vandalism and anti-social behaviour with the installation of a new CCTV system.

Chubb is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Located in the heart of the city, the cathedral, originally built as a Benedictine Abbey in 1092, is surrounded by large grounds that are accessible from all sides and susceptible to anti-social behaviour including loitering, drinking and drug use. An effective security system was needed to monitor the grounds and deter this type of behaviour.

Chris Jones, inspector, Chester Cathedral Constables, said: “In looking for a new CCTV system, I referred to the Home Office guidelines and sought the best possible solution with the greatest functionality so it was future-proofed for years to come.”

Following a number of site surveys with the cathedral’s architect and English Heritage, strict aesthetics guidelines were imposed to preserve the site’s Grade I listed status.

Chubb specified a system that included a number of long-range and short-range pan, tilt and zoom cameras as well as static dome cameras installed inside and outside the historic landmark. An automatic number plate recognition camera is also installed at the barrier protecting access to the site, and all systems are hard-wired or wirelessly routed through a series of network switches to the network video recorder in the security office.

University security 30/01/2018

Students, staff and property at Newcastle University’s new Urban Sciences Building are now protected with a sophisticated access control system, provided and installed by Chubb Fire & Security.

Chubb’s access control solution with an integrated intruder alarm is already proven in all other buildings on Newcastle University’s campus and has previously integrated with the University’s wider security management system.

With the new system, the estates management team is able to print ID passes, restrict and monitor access, and be highly responsive to potential incidents. It is also able to review arrangements for events and monitor door usage. The Urban Sciences Building has a total of 60 doors, requiring separate zoning and access restrictions for undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and visitors.

Prior to the building opening, Chubb delivered training to the estates management team to get the most out of the system.

Fire service contract 26/01/2018

Chubb Fire & Security has won a contract with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to install, upgrade, maintain and monitor fire alarm systems throughout the service's entire estate.

The contract includes 28 fire stations, two community safety centres, Cheshire Fire and Rescue’s Sadler Road site and the new safety centre based in Lymm. Each site is a different size and specification, requiring detailed individual assessments. Some stations required new custom systems to be designed; in other buildings, existing systems were upgraded.

Chubb was chosen over four other suppliers because it scored highest against benchmarked requirements. The primary goal of the new contract was to ensure all sites meet BS5839 L2 fire alarm safety standards.

All alarms are monitored by Chubb’s alarm receiving centre, which notifies keyholders and relevant emergency services if a fire is detected and alarm raised. The contract also includes maintenance and servicing requirements.

Stay safe this festive season 13/12/2017

The onset of winter and the festive season bring added fire and security risks and Chubb Fire & Security wants to help keep homes, families and their belongings safe and secure.

Chubb, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

According to the Home Office’s Fire Statistics Monitor, there were 183 fire-related fatalities from accidental dwelling fires in England between April 2016 and March 2017, representing 70 per cent of all fire-related fatalities in England. The Office for National Statistics reported over 235,000 domestic burglaries between July 2016 and June 2017, with 2,534 reported as ‘aggravated burglaries.’ To help in the prevention of crime and the prevention, detection and containment of fire, Chubb offers this 12-point guide to staying safe over the festive period:

1.    Fit a smoke alarm. Regularly test your smoke alarm and change the batteries at least once a year.

2.    Don’t place your Christmas tree by a log-fire, radiator or heater. Turn all Christmas tree lights off before going to bed at night.

3.    In case of a fire, have a plan. Make sure you have more than one escape route should your exit become blocked.

4.    If using an electric blanket, make sure the cord isn’t frayed or worn before plugging it in. Never leave it on unsupervised for longer than 15 minutes.

5.    In the kitchen, keep a fire blanket or suitable extinguisher handy.

6.    Never leave fires, candles or any form of exposed flame in the home unattended and ensure children are always supervised when around fires, candles or matches.

7.    If using gas-, oil- or coal-burning appliances, use a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm to be quickly alerted of CO dangers. Ensure the home is properly ventilated and equipment is regularly serviced and maintained.

8.    Going away? Do not post on social media about your travel plans and install a timer to switch lights on and off so that the house appears to be occupied. Ask to redirect your post, cancel any newspaper and milk deliveries and ask your neighbour to take any packages away.

9.    Do not keep keys in a place that is visible from outside, such as hanging on hooks, and do not hide keys near a door, such as under the doormat, as thieves know to check these places.

10. Install a motion-activated exterior light to welcome you home after dark – and deter unwanted visitors.

11. Outside of the home, be aware of your surroundings and take care of high-value belongings like mobile phones, which have become a popular target for thieves.

12. Exercise common sense.

“Incidents of domestic burglary are more common than many would think. By applying common sense and following our list of basic security precautions, we hope people and their properties are safer this winter,” said Jane Garland, marketing and communications, Chubb Fire & Security.

“We also urge everyone to be mindful of the devastating effects a house fire can have,” Garland added. “With there being such a high percentage of fire-related fatalities happening in homes, it is critical that domestic fire safety is not overlooked. Installing a fire or smoke alarm is one of the easiest measures to prevent a potentially devastating incident from taking place.”

Fire and security software 09/11/2017

Chubb Fire & Security is helping Welsh further education college Coleg Menai to further protect students, staff and property by upgrading its fire and security management software.

Chubb, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Chubb’s new Advisor Management software manages and controls 18 panels at the college’s Bangor Campus and two main sites in Holyhead and Llangefni. It provides one single interface for fire detection, intruder alarm, access control and CCTV system management.

“Initially, we approached Chubb regarding panel upgrades,” said Andy Tomlinson, estates services officer, Coleg Menai. “But on further discussion with our Chubb account manager and a consultation period with our tech teams, it was decided that the Advisor Management software would provide significant efficiencies to the way we manage our fire and security systems.”

The software can be accessed remotely and by more than one operator at a time, providing facilities management teams with a reliable, efficient, responsive and highly powerful system.

Alarm management is combined with live video to give immediate visibility to any alarm activation; intruder alarms include live and recorded video to track the whereabouts of an intruder. As a fully integrated system, if an alarm is triggered, lights can be turned on, sounders can be activated, and access granted or restricted – from any connected device.

“Any authorised member of our team now has access to all systems and site plans at the touch of the button, rather than having to switch between programmes. The live video stream in the corner of the screen is also extremely useful for verification purposes,” explained Tomlinson.
