South Essex College students lead the way

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

South Essex College students are leading the way with a groundbreaking innovation that turns the whole concept of delivering health and safety learning on its head.

The LOcHER (Learning Occupational Health by Experiencing Risks) Project was pioneered by Safety Groups UK (SGUK) assisted by HSE and other supporters including – SCHWL, IIRSM BSIF, ILEVE, SafetyMARK, Chambers of Commerce and IBIS Solutions. The project has been developed in close partnership with colleges such as South Essex College, Newport College and Prestons College, which are helping to explore the subjects of occupational asthma brought about by paint spraying within the motor vehicle repair industry, and also welding, wood dust and silica dust.

According to the organisers: "Learning is enhanced and retained for longer if it happens in a fun way, which involves a variety of different learning experiences, such as listening, reading, audio visual, demonstrations, involvement, discussion groups and practice. Connections and discoveries made during 'aha' moments, following exploration and laughter, are those that are likely to stay with you forever, thanks to the release of endorphins, epinephrine (adrenaline) and dopamine which create a positive emotional event."

The students have created their own short documentary-style films using their mobile phones during their exploration of occupational health risks which can be viewed here: http://locherproject.com/training/locher-project-for-colleges/
