HSE initiative focuses on health

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

On 29 February, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) outlined a new health and safety system strategy with the aim of helping Great Britain work well.

The strategy issued by HSE outlines six new priority themes with the aim of helping Great Britain to work well. The Government aspires to ensure that everyone in the workforce plays their part by making health at work solutions simple.

The six themes are: Acting together, seeking to promote a broader ownership of health and safety in Great Britain; Tackling ill health, highlighting and tackling the costs of work related ill health; Managing risk well, simplifying risk management and helping businesses to grow; Supporting small employers, giving SMEs simple advice so that they know what they have to do; Keeping pace with change, anticipating and tackling new health and safety challenges; Sharing success, promoting the benefits of Great Britain’s world class health and safety system.

The initiative complements the objectives of the Better Health at Work Alliance (BHWA): the first organisation to offer a one-stop-shop for workplace health which launched last month with the support of key expert organisations.

Keeping it simple

It is fantastic to see the HSE proactively engaging with the UK to improve workplace health. The strategy aims to reduce the complexity of workplace health, which is exactly what the BHWA does. Ill health in the workforce costs the nation £9billion annually and can cost any employer dearly by impacting productivity, so it’s essential that we make it easy for any organisation to find ways to improve workplace health. It will be really exciting to see this strategy gain momentum – long may it continue.
