Health & Safety ’10 Scotland to be officially opened by director of HSE Scotland

The Health and Safety ’10 – Scotland event, which takes place at the Royal Highland Centre on 15-16th September 2010, will be officially opened by Director of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Scotland, Dr. Paul Stollard.

With over 25 years experience in the safety industry, Dr. Paul Stollard is a leading authority on health and safety issues and in addition to opening the event, he will also give an overview of the Health and Safety challenges facing Scotland during his seminar on the first day.

According to Dr. Paul Stollard, the health and safety of workers in Scotland has improved significantly since the Health and safety at Work Act was introduced over thirty years ago; however, too many Scottish workers are still being injured, in some cases fatally, or having their health damaged by work.

Key industries where the HSE continues to seek significant improvements are construction, agriculture and waste and recycling. The HSE also plays a vital role in maintaining the safety of such major risks as nuclear sites, and the off-shore and on-shore oil and gas industries. And a new challenge is working alongside those developing large scale renewables projects.

On his involvement with the Health and Safety ’10 -Scotland event, Dr. Stollard said: “I am pleased to be associated with the Health and Safety ’10 – Scotland event, as it is aligns so well with our own strategy.  We need everyone to ‘be a part of the solution’ in reducing the number of avoidable deaths and injuries that occur in Scotland each year. Events such as this help by enabling the HSE, and other professionals, to engage with each other and therefore develop a dialogue on issues that are important to those working in high-risk industries”.
