Legionella delays spark compliance warning

Posted on Thursday 28 May 2026

ORGANISATIONS COULD be exposing themselves to unnecessary risk due to delays in accessing critical legionella data, according to environmental risk management specialists Lucion, as it launches a new digital solution designed to transform how water hygiene compliance is managed.

Across complex estates, including healthcare, facilities teams are often required to wait for formal reports before acting on legionella risk assessments. This delay between site work being completed and information being received can significantly slow down decision-making and increase the risk of issues going unaddressed.

Lucion has responded to the increasing compliance demands by introducing a new legionella management module within its NexGen platform, a compliance and risk management system used by organisations to oversee environmental risks across their estates.

The new module provides immediate access to critical risk assessment information as soon as work is completed on site, allowing users to act on key findings without waiting for reports to be finalised.

Through NexGen, users can view site lists, download asset registers and access real-time recommendations immediately after completion of the legionella risk assessment, while the report continues through Lucion’s quality control process. Clients can also view, monitor and sign off recommendations by building, helping both the client and Lucion keep on track of progress. Recommendations can be downloaded to Excel via CSV, with relevant PDF reports accessible through the platform. All data is stored indefinitely, reducing the need for printed reports and supporting a clearer, more auditable approach to compliance management.

Paul Hayball, software engineering director at Lucion, said: “The challenge for many organisations is not a lack of data, but the time it takes to access it. By making critical water hygiene information available immediately, we are helping our clients respond faster, reduce risk and take a more proactive approach to compliance.”

The platform also enables organisations to track actions across multiple sites, prioritise risks and manage ongoing compliance activity through a single, centralised system. Routine tasks, such as monitoring infrequently used outlets, can be recorded digitally, improving consistency and audit readiness.

For organisations responsible for water systems, this shift towards real-time visibility is particularly important. Under regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, duty holders are required to assess and manage legionella risk effectively, with guidance set out in the Approved Code of Practice L8.

Kieran Irving, who leads Water Hygiene & Treatment Management services at Lucion Services Ltd, added: “The ability to access information immediately after an assessment is completed is a significant step forward. It allows organisations to act on risks sooner, rather than waiting for reports, which can ultimately help prevent issues from escalating.”

As regulatory expectations increase and estates become more complex, access to timely, accurate data is becoming essential. By embedding real-time visibility into its NexGen platform, Lucion is helping organisations strengthen compliance, reduce risk and improve how water hygiene is managed across their estates.
