Have a safe festive journey
WITH CHRISTMAS approaching, many of us will be hitting the road to visit loved ones – but is your car ready for the trip? Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart shares these essential tips.

Before setting off, ensure your vehicle is prepared. Check you have plenty of fuel or charge. Your oil, brakes, gearbox, clutch and power steering fluids all need regular checks. Avoid overloading your car, as excess weight affects handling and braking. Pack carefully, secure luggage, and stay within your vehicle’s weight limits.
Try to avoid peak travel times, particularly early afternoon on Christmas Eve when major routes like the M1, M25, M6, and A1M are busiest. Check the Met Office forecast, as weather conditions can vary widely across regions.
Let friends or family know your destination and expected arrival time, and rest if you feel tired – a 20 minute break and a coffee can boost alertness.
