When port and steel facility operator
DFDS Seaways identified a health and
safety issue involving lorry drivers
climbing up the back or sides of
trucks it implemented a pilot scheme
involving two LoadSafe platforms.

The platforms can be moved to an
optimum position by forklift, with
stability provided by two water
ballasts at either end of the platform.

Constructed using cold-formed steel
sections, the units provide a strong
but lightweight structure. Manufac –
tured in line withPUWER 1998 & B.S
4592 (Part 1) to withstand 5Kn/m2 of
downward force, greater levels of
safety are ensured when loading and
unloading from trailers.

“It’s definitely a process of
educating the drivers and it is early
days, but if the system works the way
we expect it to then it will prove to be
a much safer process for all involved
at the steel terminal,” said Kevin
Tighe, head of Health Safety and
Security at DFDS.
