The hidden cost of standing at work

Posted on Monday 7 July 2025

STANDING FOR hours at work may seem routine—but for thousands across the UK, it’s taking a serious toll.

With support from OnePoll, COBA surveyed 1,000 non-office workers who stand for at least four hours a day. The results reveal a concerning reality:

  • 80% have sustained at least one injury
  • 89% report multiple health problems
  • 34% say standing has affected their mental health
  • 45% struggle to get out of bed some days

This issue spans manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and healthcare—sectors that rely on standing workers, yet often leave them unsupported. Back pain, knee strain, and fatigue aren’t just minor annoyances. They're preventable risks that hurt both people and productivity.

On average, workers lost 2.4 days to standing-related injuries in the past year, costing them—and their employers—time and money. Some have even had to change jobs (27%) or seek medical treatment (26%).

Chartered physiotherapist Connor Ruffinato explains that prolonged standing forces our muscles to work continuously, leading to soreness, fatigue, and potential long-term issues. He recommends regular movement and “exercise snacking”—brief exercises throughout the day—to counteract strain.

But when movement isn’t always possible, other interventions matter. Encouragingly, 82% of workers who used anti-fatigue mats said they found them helpful. These mats support micro-movements that reduce muscle fatigue and stiffness, helping workers feel better—physically and mentally.

Providing this kind of support isn’t just good practice—it aligns with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which places a duty of care on employers to safeguard worker welfare “so far as is reasonably practicable.”

Every environment is different, and one solution doesn’t fit all. That’s why we’ve developed MatBrain—a tool that helps identify the best anti-fatigue matting solution for your unique site. Answer 8 quick questions to find the best solution suited to your needs.

It’s time to take a stand—for the people who stand every day.
