How do I report an incident under RIDDOR to the Health and Safety Executive?

Changes have been introduced to the way that incidents are reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Only fatal and major injuries and incidents may now be reported by phone. All other work-related injuries and incidents to which HSE needs to be alerted under RIDDOR (the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995), will need to be reported via one of a suite of seven online forms on HSE’s website.

Businesses will also no longer be able to report incidents by email, post or fax.

This should not present a significant change for many, as more than half of reportable injuries are already notified to HSE through the website. The new forms are intuitive and quick and easy to complete. An online help facility will also be provided.

Separate to the drive to online incident reporting, it is important to stress that people will still be able to make complaints about health and safety in the workplace. It remains essential that HSE is aware of activity where workers are being put at risk and that workers are able to quickly and easily report these occurrences.
