Now that the Olympic and Paralympic games have closed and become a fond memory, Britain can look back on one of the most successful games ever and pat itself on the back. A job well done!

Now that the Olympic and Paralympic games have closed and become a fond memory, Britain can look back on one of the most successful games ever and pat itself on the back. A job well done!

In fact, the safety elements of preparing and presenting the games should also be awarded a gold medal in their own right. With over 12,500 workers on Olympic sites and not a single fatal injury through the build and event, the safety team of the Olympic Delivery Authority, headed by Lawrence Waterman, deserves special congratulations. This really was an outstanding achievement.

As always, there are the unsung heroes. For example the exemplary way the Health and Safety Executive supported the safety programme and assisted in setting the agenda for safe working; the suppliers of safety equipment who delivered safe and high quality product, on time, to specification, and rapidly resolved issues as they arose; and let us not forget the considerable input of the games makers who not only helped the public in a cheerful manner, but made sure they were safe throughout the Olympic sites.

The BSIF ‘doffs its cap’ to everyone involved, from the upfront athletes, organisers and construction companies, to those people who worked so hard to deliver a safe games. A gold medal achievement we should all be proud of.
