Asbestos management advice

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

Each year 1000 people who have worked in building maintenance and repair die from past exposure to asbestos fibres. Half a million commercial buildings still contain asbestos.

Are you clear about whether the duty to manage asbestos affects you? Monitor Environmental’s general manager Kevin Raw suggests it affects you if are responsible for maintenance and repairs or are a duty holder.

• You own the building
• You are responsible through a contract or tenancy agreement
• There is no formal contract or agreement but have control of the building
•  In a multi occupied building, you are the owner and have taken responsibility for maintenance and repairs of the whole building
