M&S boosts worker safety
MARKS & SPENCER is rolling out the WalkSafe Pro personal safety app to help colleagues feel safer when travelling alone or commuting at night, as part of a wider investment in employee wellbeing and community safety.

The retailer said the app will provide staff with access to real-time journey support, including live location sharing, SOS alerts and safety information powered by police data, local authority insights and reports from other users.
SOS alerts raised through the app will connect directly to Mitie’s 24/7 control centre, enabling real-time monitoring and coordinated support where needed.
The app can also be used outside working hours, allowing colleagues to access support during personal journeys as well as work-related travel.
As part of the initiative, M&S stores will gradually be identified within the app as designated “safe spaces”, offering members of the public somewhere to seek reassurance or assistance if they feel unsafe while travelling. Colleagues will receive training to help support the scheme.
Thinus Keeve, retail director at M&S, said: “Our colleagues’ need for safety doesn’t stop when a shift ends – and our colleagues have told us that travelling to and from work can be when they feel most vulnerable.
“WalkSafe is a simple but powerful way we’re responding. It’s another way we’re continuing to invest in security – helping our people stay connected and supported wherever they are.”
Jason Towse, Managing Director of Business Services at Mitie, said the partnership would help provide “practical, real-time support” for colleagues and communities.
WalkSafe founder Emma Kay said the partnership with M&S would help extend access to personal safety support and give people “greater confidence, reassurance and access to help when they need it.”
