One of the key themes of the Lofstedt review of health and safety was the streamlining and simplification of regulations including the HSE’s Approved Codes of Practice (ACoP).
Visitors to this year’s Safety and Health Expo (15-17 May, NEC), had the opportunity to see the latest innovations in the market place, to compare products and get expert advice from the leading manufacturers and suppliers. Many also benefitted from the varied educational opportunities on offer over the three days of the exhibition

It can be quite tough being in the health and safety industry. Apparently health and safety stopped Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney from singing a duet, pancake races cannot be run in the streets and students cannot throw their mortar boards in the air, to name just a few of the ridiculous items pinned on the safety culture.
The health and safety industry has seen a huge increase in fake Safety Certificates over the last year with well established brands and notified bodies (authorised test houses) being the primary targets. In conjunction with the notified bodies, we have established links with Government to highlight fake and incorrect certificates and have these removed.
Currently European legislation regulates the performance of rainwear for workers to make certain it meets a minimum requirement. This ensures workers are adequately protected in adverse weather and since they frequently have little choice but to continue to work despite the weather, it is important they receive sensible protection.
Now that the Olympic and Paralympic games have closed and become a fond memory, Britain can look back on one of the most successful games ever and pat itself on the back. A job well done!
In the September issue of Health & Safety Matters we highlighted the growing problem of Fake CE Certificates of Conformance and the consequent issues this raises. If the product has not been tested, will it really perform as it should? Probably not, and since the certificate is not genuine, the product should not be used in any occupational environment, since noncertified personal protective equipment is illegal for use at work.
On 11th September the Government announced plans to make hundreds of thousands of businesses exempt from health and safety inspections, bring in new legislation to protect businesses from “compensation culture” claims and to scrap or overhaul over 3,000 regulations.
