Findings of the long awaited Triennial Review of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were published on January 9th, concluding that the HSE is fit for purpose as a non-departmental public body and that, with some recommended improvements, it should continue to carry out all of its functions. The BSIF would like to congratulate all the extraordinary people named in the New Year’s Honours list announced on 30th December 2013. We want to particularly single out Geoff Hooke, a founding member and former CEO of the BSIF, who received a British Empire Medal for his services to the Safety Clothing and Equipment Sector.
With recent statistics released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) showing a decrease in the number of deaths and injuries in the workplace, these highlight the serious progress that has been made in the health and safety industry in the UK. Whilst one death or injury in the workplace is one too many, compared to statistics from around the world, the UK stands out from the crowd.
Submissions are now open for this year’s BSIF Safety Awards which will take place at Safety & Health Expo at the London Excel in June. You don’t have to be a member of the BSIF to enter the awards, they are also open to non-members looking to publicise their products and services.
The BSIF organises and coordinates a large and wide-ranging portfolio of groups for companies of all sizes who are active in the Health & Safety, Environmental Protection and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) markets in the UK and Europe.
As Easter passes and the spring arrives with us it heralds a time of change. At long last we have the release draft of the revised PPE Directive which is now being set out as a regulation. This topic will be covered in a separate section.
Since the beginning of the year, the BSIF has seen a growth in membership from specialist suppliers of equipment and expert providers of training to the safety and health market.
A great deal has been written about this year, marking the 40th anniversary of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act and rightly so.
