The devolution of the component states within the UK may be a laudable political ambition but if national requirements are devolved so that each country can establish its own version of safety and environment regulations it often results in, at the least, confusion and, at the worst, significant costs on industry.
The BSIF was pleased to learn that the EU Commission has published a mandate for CEN to develop a new standard to replace EN 353-1 [fall arrest products] which had its presumption of conformity withdrawn on safety grounds. The BSIF emphasises that many 353-1 products available in the market are safe and perform adequately.
With the year 2010 behind us and 2011 now in full swing, the eyes and ears of the health and safety industry will continue to fix on the Government as it firms up new plans and procedures to support the advancement of the health and safety industry.

The use of harmonised ENs is the most transparent and convenient route for products to evidence that they comply with the PPE Directive.
The deadline for the BSIF Safety Awards 2011, held at the Safety and Health Expo is fast approaching and potential entrants are now being urged to submit their entries by Friday 4th March 2011.
