productLast year, the EU Commission published interpretational documents to permit the marketing of medical devices as personal protection. While this avoided the nonsense of products needing to be marketed and sold separately, there are still some problem areas.
productWe are now looking forward to working with David Lummis, our new CEO, who took post in September. While the BSIF is strong and has developed well over recent years, there is little doubt that a fresh approach and the initiatives he will generate will enhance the BSIF’s position as a key stakeholder in the UK safety industry.

productThe increasing attention to health & safety must eventually contribute to safer working practices but the BSIF has serious concerns about the ability of purchasers of safety equipment to gain accurate information in a simple and easily understood form at the point of sale.
productThe decision of the EU Commission to advise in the Official Journal that structural anchors are not PPE and the reluctance of the standards makers to amend EN 795 [now in process] has created much confusion over the past 10 years. More recently a similar decision to take away the harmonised status of EN 353-1 is also causing confusion when fall arrest products are selected and purchased.
