It is clear that the recently published report ‘Common Sense, Common Safety’ from Lord Young will have a significant effect if it is fully implemented.
Through its members, the BSIF provides considerable support and expertise in the revision of standards by attendance at the relevant meetings.
The devolution of the component states within the UK may be a laudable political ambition but if national requirements are devolved so that each country can establish its own version of safety and environment regulations it often results in, at the least, confusion and, at the worst, significant costs on industry.
The BSIF was pleased to learn that the EU Commission has published a mandate for CEN to develop a new standard to replace EN 353-1 [fall arrest products] which had its presumption of conformity withdrawn on safety grounds. The BSIF emphasises that many 353-1 products available in the market are safe and perform adequately.
