On 11th September the Government announced plans to make hundreds of thousands of businesses exempt from health and safety inspections, bring in new legislation to protect businesses from “compensation culture” claims and to scrap or overhaul over 3,000 regulations.

On 11th September the Government announced plans to make hundreds of thousands of businesses exempt from health and safety inspections, bring in new legislation to protect businesses from compensation culture claims and to scrap or overhaul over 3,000 regulations.

The BSIF’s David Lummis reminds business owners and managers that, despite the new government initiatives, they are still responsible for the health and wellbeing of their employees:

“Whilst any reduction in unnecessary bureaucracy for lawabiding, low-risk businesses must be welcomed, this is not an opportunity to take our eye off the ball. Workers across all industries in Britain have benefited from a robust set of health and safety regulations that have given us an exemplary health and safety record and business owners and operators should not see this as a reduction in their legal requirements.

“It may mean that some low risk businesses do not have to jump through so many hoops to satisfy Health and Safety Executive inspections but the obligation is still on them to meet all the legal requirements and ensure the safety of their employees.”
