Bursary opens health and safety careers
ANNUAL INITIATIVE from Phoenix Health & Safety will invest in the next generation of safety leaders.

The future of workplace safety depends on attracting the next generation of capable professionals. Yet while organisations across the UK continue to seek competent health and safety professionals to manage increasingly complex workplace risks, many aspiring professionals still face a significant barrier to entering the profession: the cost of recognised qualifications.
To help address that challenge, Phoenix Health & Safety has launched the Future Safety Leaders Bursary, an annual initiative that will fund three fully supported places each year on either the NEBOSH National General Certificate or the NEBOSH General Diploma, helping talented individuals begin or progress their careers in health and safety, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Today’s health and safety professionals help organisations make better decisions about risk, improve operational performance and build more resilient businesses. As those responsibilities continue to grow, so too does the need to attract talented people into the profession.
Phoenix believes safer workplaces are built not simply through compliance, but through capable people making better decisions every day. The Future Safety Leaders Bursary reflects that philosophy and forms part of Phoenix’s wider commitment to developing capability at every stage of a health and safety career; from those taking their first step into the profession through to senior leaders responsible for organisational safety.
One bursary will be reserved each year for an Armed Forces veteran or service leaver, recognising the exceptional leadership, resilience and decision-making skills developed through military service while supporting the transition into a second career where those qualities can continue to protect people and strengthen organisations.
Nick Higginson, CEO of Phoenix Health & Safety, said: “If we want safer workplaces tomorrow, we have to invest in the people who will lead them.
Health and safety needs talented, curious people from every background. Yet for some, the cost of professional qualifications remains the barrier that prevents them taking that first step.
We believe opportunity should be determined by ability, ambition and commitment, not financial circumstance.
This isn’t simply an investment in qualifications. It’s an investment in the future leadership of our profession. We hope today’s bursary recipients become the people others look to when difficult decisions need to be made. Leaders whose judgement helps protect people and strengthen organisations for years to come.”
For Phoenix, training is the starting point, but capability is the outcome that ultimately protects people and strengthens organisations. Alongside its accredited learning programmes, the organisation continues to invest in career development initiatives, educational resources, industry thought leadership and structured learning pathways that help individuals build long-term careers in health and safety.
Applications for the inaugural Future Safety Leaders Bursary are open now.
Applicants are invited to explain why they wish to pursue a career in health and safety, with successful candidates selected by a panel from Phoenix’s senior leadership team based on their potential, motivation and commitment to making a positive impact through the profession.
The Future Safety Leaders Bursary reflects Phoenix’s belief that investing in the future of health and safety begins by investing in the people who will shape it. Because the safest workplaces of tomorrow will be shaped by the people we choose to invest in today.
