Safe start for young workers
August 1st 2006 Research has shown that, across Europe, 18 to 24-year olds are at least 50% more likely to be injured in the workplace than more experienced workers.
With the aim of improving the occupational health and safety of the EU's 75 million young people, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has launched the Safe Start campaign.
It has already received the backing of employers' representatives, trade unions, youth organisations and the education sector, as well as all EU member states.
Hans-Horst Konkolewsky, director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at work, says "We can't just leave it until young people have already started work to teach them about health and safety. We have to reach them early while they are still at school or college so that they get used to a culture of risk prevention."
The campaign culminates in the European Week for Safety and Health at Work (23rd to 27th October) when awareness-raising activities will take place across Europe. More articles from HSM News Desk: |
