Standards in practice
August 1st 2008

For the first time in the UK a national set of occupational health industry standards for the construction workforce is to be implemented.

A total of 50 Sainsbury's refurbishment and development sites will be involved in a programme of health surveillance checks and raising awareness of workrelated health issues for construction personnel.

Created and published by Constructing Better Health (CBH), a non-profit organisation funded by the construction industry, government and trade unions, this set of standards and best practice gives direct focus on the health and 'fitness for task' of the country's construction workforce.

Michelle Aldous, at CBH, comments: "Across the industry there is a lot of misconception and confusion about what occupational health is all about and there was no consistent approach to tackling the issues. We have found a way to tackle those inconsistencies and give employers the support they need."
