Aids compliance
October 1st 2006

The HSE has enforced a new set of guidelines to protect the potential two million employees in the UK who may be at risk from the long term effects of noise in the workplace. It is the duty of the employer to ensure they adequately protect against one of the most prevalent, but often ignored, industrial diseases – noise -induced hearing loss/tinnitus.

There are four 'action levels' and two 'legal limits' to consider. Pulsar Instruments says its Model 22A doseBadge system allows companies to quickly and efficiently assess the daily noise exposure for employees. A separate peak channel allows assessment of any risk from impulsive noise in the workplace.

The employee wears the comfortable, lightweight dosimetry unit on their shoulder or safety hat. The fact that there are neither controls nor cables adds to safety and convenience.

An enhanced software package allows the user to create concise reports.

A reader unit with integral acoustic calibrator is used to reset, calibrate, start, stop and download measurements from each doseBadge. The reader uses infrared technology to communicate with each Model 22A doseBadge.

The company says these cost-effective measurement systems take the worry out of assessments by supplying everything needed to carry out a noise survey.
