Duty to drivers
April 1st 2008

UK employers are taking huge risks in allowing staff to go unchecked when driving their own cars on company business, warns Simon Harris, of FleetConsult UK. He believes many are not insured for business use and that their cars are not roadworthy and are being run illegally.

An answer to the duty of care laws, he believes, is Tripometer, an employeefriendly procedure which records via mobile phone essential information that an employer needs to comply with legislation.

Stephen Saunders, MD of Anvil Consultants, Newport, says "We initially used Tripometer to automate our mileage collection process, saving time and money." Now, the company uses it to provide a verifiable means of ensuring that it complies with duty of care obligations to employees.

An audio file, automatically transferred from the car to a central database provides a mileage capture and carbon emissions audit. It includes distance travelled and reason for journey. An employer has instant access to employees' vehicle, licence and insurance details.
