Safety in numbers
April 1st 2008

Community workers who fail to give the all clear after attending meetings alone are to be called by emergency operators to check that they are safe.

Staff at Leeds Federated Housing Association are among the first to use the new combined Code5 Companion service from Orbis Monitoring and Panztel.

Any worker concerned about where they are going or who they are meeting need only key 9 on their mobile phone to record their whereabouts and 5 to raise the alarm and get the emergency services.

The 9 key also activates a Companion system that prompts users to log the expected duration of the meeting and calls users back at the end of the time given. If the call is not answered, the alarm is raised in the same way as if the 5 key had been pressed.

Pressing 5 puts emergency operators at the Orbis 24 hour response centre on the line to assess the situation, locate the user and send the appropriate support.
