Maintaining standards
June 1st 2008

Purchasers, specifiers and users of materials handling and loading bay equipment are being urged to check that all products they consider buying or using are CE marked and meet the appropriate EU quality and safety standards.

The warning comes from John Meale, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, former President of the British Materials Handing Federation and a board member of the Federation Europeenne de la Manutention.

Meale, MD of Thorworld Industries, says "An increasing quantity of materials handling equipment that does not carry the official CE mark is coming into the country, particularly from Eastern Europe and Asia". He points out that using inferior materials handling and loading bay equipment could be a threat to the health and safety of personnel in the workplace.

"Before you buy, always check with the supplier that the equipment is CE marked and has been made to EU quality and safety standards; don't just assume it has been. It's a false economy to buy cheap substitutes if they are not safe to use, as it could lead to a serious accident".

However, Meale stresses that he is not condemning all imports, just those that do not fully meet the appropriate European standards and legislation.

Thorworld manufactures and supplies a wide range of loading and unloading equipment and loading bay accessories.
