Asbestos risk: the need for action

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 brings together three previous sets of regulations covering the prohibition of asbestos, the control of asbestos at work and asbestos licensing.

These and legislation such as the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the CDM Regulations 2007 impose a clear 'Duty to Manage' hazards, directed at those who control commercial or public premises.

Sue Burbeck, MD, says "If employees or visitors to a site make a complaint, or worse still contract medical conditions, any company or individual manager is wide open to legal action.

"And simply saying 'I didn't know we had any asbestos' is not good enough. The message to managers is clear: to remove any doubt or risk, get an independent professional survey done without delay."
